VFS Portugal Appointment from the USA (2026): Chicago, Houston, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC

Since 11 June 2026 every Portugal visa application in the United States, whatever the category, must be submitted in person at the VFS Global centre that has jurisdiction over your place of residence. That makes the appointment the gate to the whole process, and appointments at the US centres open in small batches that are taken within minutes. This guide covers the six centres, which one covers your state, the long-stay categories most Americans apply for, when dates actually appeared in our monitoring, and how to have the next one booked in your name.

The six VFS Portugal centres in the USA

VFS Global is the official partner of the Embassy of Portugal in the USA. As of September 2026 it runs six centres; Chicago opened in July 2026.

Which centre covers your state

You must book at the centre for your jurisdiction; VFS reminded applicants of this on 27 June 2026 and publishes an Areas of Jurisdiction document. In short:

• New York: Connecticut, Michigan, New York; Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands.
• San Francisco: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming; Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
• Washington DC, Chicago, Houston and Miami share one consular jurisdiction: Alabama, Arkansas, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin; and the Bahamas. Pick the centre nearest to you.
• Not VFS at all: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont apply at the Consulate General in Boston; New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware at Newark; Rhode Island at Providence; the New Bedford area at New Bedford. If you live in one of these states, this guide does not apply to you.

Which visa categories go through VFS

The US centres handle Portugal's long-stay national visas, the ones most Americans relocating to Portugal need:

• D7, for retirees and people living on passive income.
• D8, the digital nomad visa for remote employees and freelancers paid from outside Portugal.
• D1 and D3, work and highly qualified activity.
• D4, study, and D6, family reunification.

In the booking flow these appear under names such as “Portugal Long Stay” and “Portugal Visa Application, Long Stay”, with sub-categories for students and for highly qualified applicants and company employees. When US dates actually appeared

We monitor the US Portugal calendars continuously. In the 120 days to 2 September 2026 our system recorded 98 new-date observations across New York, Washington DC, Miami and Houston. Times are US Eastern:

• Late afternoon dominated: 31 observations at 16:00, 8 at 17:00 and 17 at 18:00.
• Midnight was the second cluster: 22 observations at 00:00, plus 14 at 11:00. The remaining six were scattered across 13:00, 15:00 and 20:00.
• Friday was the busiest day with 46 observations, then Tuesday 24, Monday 18, Thursday 10.
• Dates were typically 20 to 59 days ahead (57 of 98); 16 were under 20 days out and 25 were 60 to 90 days out.

Two honest caveats. These are the moments our monitoring saw a date, which also depends on when it was polling, so treat them as patterns rather than a VFS schedule. And a date that appears at 16:03 is usually gone by 16:10, which is why refreshing by hand rarely works.

What to bring on the day

VFS's June 2026 notice is explicit: all required documentation must be prepared and presented at the visit, including the original passport. Use the checklist VFS publishes for your category, and expect the centre to turn away incomplete files.

How to get the next date booked in your name

1. Create your VFS account and complete your applicant details before you start looking, so the booking takes seconds rather than minutes.
2. Know your centre from the jurisdiction list above. A booking at the wrong centre is not accepted.
3. Check both the regular calendar and, where it exists, the Prime Time calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply by mail or at the consulate instead?

Since 11 June 2026, applications in the United States are made exclusively in person at the VFS centre for your jurisdiction, regardless of category. Residents of the consulate-only states listed above apply at their Consulate General.

Which centre should I book if I live in Texas or Florida?

Texas and Florida fall under the jurisdiction shared by Washington DC, Chicago, Houston and Miami. Houston and Miami are the natural choices; any of the four is valid.

Does an appointment guarantee the visa?

No. The Portuguese consulate decides. The appointment is where your file is lodged.

When do I pay QuickVisa, and what if my plans change?
