How to Plan a Multi-Country Schengen Trip: Visa Strategy Guide

March 11, 2026 2 min read

Visiting Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and Amsterdam in one trip? The Schengen visa makes this possible, but knowing which consulate to apply through is crucial.

The Golden Rule

Apply through the consulate of the country where you'll spend the most nights. If equal, apply through your first entry country.

Example Itinerary Strategy

Let's say you want to visit: Paris (3 nights), Rome (3 nights), Barcelona (2 nights), Amsterdam (2 nights).

Problem: France and Italy are tied at 3 nights each, and both have terrible VFS appointment availability.

Smart strategy: Add 1-2 extra nights in Amsterdam (total: 4 nights Netherlands). Now Netherlands is your primary destination, and Dutch VFS appointments are much easier to book.

The Strategy Explained

  1. Identify the easiest country to book through — Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Portugal
  2. Adjust your itinerary so that country has the most nights
  3. Apply through that country's VFS
  4. Travel freely across all Schengen states once you have the visa

What the Consulate Checks

The consulate will verify that your itinerary justifies applying through them. Make sure:

  • You have hotel bookings in their country for the claimed nights
  • Your itinerary is realistic (don't claim 10 nights in a country with nothing planned)
  • Your first entry or main destination matches your application

Consulate Booking Difficulty (Easiest to Hardest)

  1. Austria — Usually available within days
  2. Netherlands — Good availability, fast processing
  3. Germany — Good availability from most countries
  4. Portugal — Moderate, improving
  5. Spain — Moderate difficulty
  6. France — Very competitive
  7. Italy — Hardest to book worldwide

Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Include real hotel bookings for every country in your itinerary
  • Show a logical travel route (Paris → Amsterdam → Berlin makes sense)
  • Book refundable accommodation in case plans change

Don't

  • Apply through a country you're not actually visiting
  • Fake an itinerary — consulates can and do verify
  • Book one-way flights without showing the full route
